I don't like QT (GTK looks better for me), but if it makes you more inclined to update VLC interface... Please go on!

BTW, QGtkStyle is still not 100% working (it is a very good effort, and works well for most situations, but in my case, it doesn't render background images, which means it still looks (slightly) different)

Anyway, the current wxWidgets interface is *already* alien to the rest of my desktop; it uses the same widgets, but... well, I'm sure the next interface will be better, even in QT

BTW, Qt can now render using the GTK+ styles. As in whatever the hell GTK+ is using as a widget style Qt will take that look on.

KDE, by virtue of using Qt. Can also have its applications look like GTK+ apps now.

After much trial and error I had to copy the ffmpeg folder from my 7.10 install to 8.04. Then I was able to compile vlc.

However, 'make' returns the following output:

I can't thank you enough for this post. Before following these instructions every time i went to play anything over my network including dvr.ms f iles it was choppy to the point of being unwatchable. The only thing that did not work for me was the final % make command. but everything seems to working despite that.

I want VLC with S/PDIF working on Ubuntu Feisty 64-bit.
S/PDIF was fixed for version 0.8.6d, which will be not released for Feisty, unless it will be followed by a security update. Security is the only reason Ubuntu upgrades packages.
So, logically, I need to compile VLC from sources, (that's how I've found this Blog) which I yet wasn't able to do for my 64-bit system.

Basically - Debian or Ubuntu maintainers make some changes on the VLC sources, after which it's possible to compile and link them on a 64-bit Linux system.

The Hardy source VLC package I've rebuilt for Gutsy has the problem of randomly losing sound for about 1 second, every so often, ie. once in 1 to 5 minutes.
I'm using S/PDIF, ALSA, IEC958 via HDA Nvidia on 2.6.23.14 kernel. The S/PDIF passthrough output in Xfmedia works fine, so it must be a problem of the VLC package.

2. go to: http://packages.ubuntu.com/hardy/gr...
At the bottom of the page, in the line beginning with "Source Package:", there are 3 links: dsc, .tar.gz and .diff.gz -- download these into a new directory.

3. cd to the directory you created, and do:
dpkg-source -x *.dsc

4. cd to the directory created by the previous command, and do:
dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot

5. cd .. and do:
sudo dpkg -i *.deb

You should have the latest VLC installed on your system now.

Clearly, there's some incorrect syntax, as nothing happens. However, when I navigate to that directory in a terminal and type ./vlc it works.

I guess you don't use any KDE, Google Earth, Opera or Skype.

You don't want to read the post I make, fine. I just don't care. The default interface will be Qt, but we don't remove code, so just use the wx plugin instead of the Qt plugin.

ok my views, MEDIA PLAYER CLASSIC from K-LiteCodec pak, is top. 1) QT is evil... because it is GPL (+ some exceptions)/commercial and not LGPL (like GTK). I think graphical toolkits should be available, for free, to everything (also not-GPLed - but open source - or closed source applications) in order to provide easy access to the toolkit (without buying a license from Trolltech) and a consistent environment to the end-user (gtk2qt is just an hack), independently of the programs he uses (GPLed or not).

Very good guide although I had to install further packages about which bootstrap complained.
Under Ubuntu one must also not use libportaudio-dev but rather portaudio19-dev otherwise make fails on portaudio.c

Hi again I found the error , I updated from feisty and package libpthread-dev was a old package, so I delete it and installed libpthread-stubs0-dev from Gutsy repository, after this compilation works fine.
Hope this help someone with the same problem.

When I install VLC, I followed your tip.
But , I could not install VLC with x264, .... have you any idea following case.

1. I could not compile with x264 encoder. Without to include x264 tree, I can compile.
I did configure with "enable-x264" and "--with-x264-tree" option.
I compiled current version of x264 in the "extras" of vlc main folder.
But I had following error messega:

2. I got warning message on "avahi-client". I did "--disable-avahi-client", but I got still warning message.
What is the avahi-client ? how can I disable it in my confugure.

I'm relatively new to Linux but seem to have followed your detailed instructions without triggering any error messages. I'm on Ubuntu Feisty and believe I've successfully compiled VLC for use with JACK.

However... (stupid newbie question): How do I run it? VLC doesn't appear on the menu, and typing "vlc" in a terminal returns this error:

The program 'vlc' is currently not installed. You can install it by typing:
sudo apt-get install vlc-nox
Make sure you have the 'universe' component enabled

Does this mean the compile failed?

what does the revision and version have todo with something better? that's very trivial and useless info. Media player has so many b/c it sux. VLC is better than wmp, and bsplayer? never heard of it so worse than wmp maybe. Winamp sux b/c its too slow but it used to be good back in the 90's.

Can you give me the full step to build it without gui.

What i mean is since we are doing
apt-get build-dep vlc
it installs lot of things.

I only want to use it as vlc server and only for streaming. Can you let me know the minimum configuration.

Second do i need ffmpeg for using vlc only for server.

American ISPs are not that good. Rather expensive for less services and not as dynamic and innovation oriented as Free or Neuf.
But I get your point, even if french ISPs are good, they can still improve.
